Apps we use!

Helpful apps that get us through the day to day obstacles!

None of them are perfect, but when used together, it makes locating spots a little easier.

IOVERLANDER

iOverlander is a great app with a bunch of resources for traveling by vehicle. It has tons of spots to park overnight in mountainous areas, forests, deserts and even in cities. It offers tons of search results for amenities like locating potable water, showers, fuel, dump stations and many others. 29 other options to be exact.

Out in the wilderness, the app is great to find many locations. Most of the camp sites are submitted by other travelers. Some locations there are many options while other times it can be as scarce as any other app. This app is great to use when you are in the area you want to park or searching for that night, but only decent when deciding days ahead of time.

In cities this app has been my #1 go-to for spots. It is truly fantastic and I’m always sure to thank all the great people who shared where they stayed and what worked for them.

CAMPENDIUM

Campendium is great for limited uses. The app itself leaves a lot to be desired. It has a ton to offer- from free and paid campsites and dump stations to cell signals. In order to have access to the cell signal aspect of the app, you have to pay $35. This app is great to use in conjunction with other apps.

I use this app to sort of get me to the area I want to camp. Because I need a cell signal to work, this app shows me the best available options. Users leave reviews of their locations, post pictures and also report their cell reception.

The app has a lot of the BLM and National Forest campgrounds.

SEKR

Sekr helps you explore the outdoors- quickly and safely finding last-minute campsites or helping plan outdoor adventures.

The regular features on the app offer an array of filters, but it has a $1.99 monthly subscription upgrade option available. This app isnt as popular as some of the others, but it a good app to have in your arsenal. There are many locations like Walmarts, gyms, parks- but users can also input a spot the’ve found and leave a review. A cool feature is that you can see how many people around you use the app, what their distance is and even leave them a message!

NATIONAL FOREST & GRASSLANDS EXPLORER

The National Forest & Grasslands Explorer app is great for services inside the National Forest (not to be confused with National Parks). The app itself is a big challenge to use but with time comes ease. You can search for campgrounds and dispersed camping in the area, locate toilets, boat ramps, hiking trails and many other features. Using this app in conjunction with the Avenza Maps app, you’ll be able to locate some seriously prime vehicle camping locations for free. Just be careful as some roads are not maintained and can be closed due to dangerous conditions.

AVENZA MAPS

Avenza Maps: Offline Mapping is not for the faint of heart. It is incredibly difficult to use, but is also a level up in finding camping spots in the National Forests. It has all sorts of census and municipal maps, along with maps of National Parks and many others for sale. For our use, we have to scour for the free National Forest maps. These are the same as what you would get for a physical copy in the park. The best part of this app is that it will give you pinpoint GPS coordinates that you can copy and paste straight into your navigational platform. This app will bring you to some of the most hidden National Forest roads- allowing for tons of free sites to choose from.

ALLSTAYS

Allstays has many different apps and can be quite confusing. Options include Camp and RV, Truck and Travel, Overnight Parking Walmart, Camp and Tent, Military Camp and RV, Rest Stop Plus and RV Dumps. Each with a unique quality about them.

Our favorite is the Camp and RV app. The app encompasses many features while the other apps offer all in one. It even shows the height of bridges. Allstays has tons of information and places to park that aren’t often thought about- like the Elks Club parking lots. The best part of the app is it shows just about every National Forest and BLM camp areas. It also has a link to google so you have the ability to view pictures of the area. It even pinpoints accurate weather by NOAA right on the app.
