Let’s Start!
In 1971, yes, we know that’s long before some of you were born… the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist artist Fela Kuti, joined with Ginger Baker (drummer, composer for the rock band Cream). And if you never heard of Cream, please Google Eric Clapton and then come back. So what happened then? Well, Fela brought about the fusion of West African music with American funk and jazz, becoming one of the first pioneers of Afrobeat. The first song on the Live! album, began with an introduction to the song O l’oun t’awa se n’yara Je k’abere and as Fela says,
“O l’oun t’awa se n’yara Je k’abere … means Let’s start what we have come into the room to do”
Why does this matter? Because like Afrobeat, Destination Now Here, is a fusion of minds and people from all walks of life, each with their own unique experience. We have diverse talents and a vision to make a difference in the world around us. Fela became a great activist, and some of us may follow that path on our journeys across the country. Others may share their art. Some are here to provide support. And others are just along for the wild ride. But no matter whether the drummer beat you march to is Ginger Baker’s, Ringo Starr’s or Sheila E’s, we welcome you on this great adventure!
