Getting Mail & Packages: The Basics

As a nomad, living a life on the move can be exciting and fulfilling. However, one challenge that many nomads face is receiving packages while constantly changing locations. Whether you’re a digital nomad, a van dweller, or simply someone who enjoys the freedom of a nomadic lifestyle, here are some tips on how to receive packages while living on the road.

Use General Delivery: General Delivery is a service offered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that allows you to receive packages at a local post office, even if you don’t have a permanent address. You can have your package addressed to the post office of your choice, with your name and “General Delivery” written on the address line. Once the package arrives, you can pick it up at the designated post office by showing your identification.

Utilize Mail Forwarding Services: There are several mail forwarding services available that provide you with a physical address where you can have your packages delivered. These services receive your packages on your behalf, and then forward them to your current location or hold them for pick-up. Some popular mail forwarding services include MyUS, Shipito, and Traveling Mailbox.

Utilize Friends or Family’s Address: If you have friends or family who are willing to receive packages on your behalf, you can use their address as a shipping address. Just make sure to communicate with them beforehand and provide clear instructions on how to handle the packages. Be respectful of their time and effort, and offer to compensate them for any inconvenience.

Use Amazon Lockers: Amazon Lockers are secure self-service kiosks located in various locations, such as grocery stores, convenience stores, and retail outlets, where you can have your packages delivered. You simply select a nearby Amazon Locker as your shipping address during checkout, and once the package is delivered, you will receive a unique pickup code. You can then go to the Amazon Locker and enter the pickup code to retrieve your package.

UPS/Fedex Mailbox and Package Forwarding: These are typically the most expensive options, however they offer the most flexibility and convenience for mail and packages.

(For Canada Residents) Consider Flex Delivery: Flex Delivery is a service offered by Canada Post that allows you to receive packages at a post office of your choice in Canada. You can have your package addressed to the post office of your choice, with your Flex Delivery address as the shipping address. Once the package arrives, you will receive an email notification, and you can pick it up at the designated post office by showing your identification.

Check with Local Shipping Companies: Depending on your location, there may be local shipping companies or package receiving services that cater to travelers and can receive packages on your behalf. Do some research and inquire locally to see if there are any options available in the area where you’re staying.

Plan Ahead and Communicate with Senders: When ordering items online, make sure to plan ahead and allow for extra time for shipping and delivery. Communicate with the senders about your nomadic lifestyle and provide them with clear instructions on how to address and deliver your packages.

Consider Digital Alternatives: In some cases, you may be able to receive digital versions of documents or packages, such as e-books, digital tickets, or electronic gift cards, which can eliminate the need for physical package deliveries.

Receiving packages or mail while living a nomadic lifestyle requires careful planning and consideration of different options. General Delivery, package forwarding services, utilizing a friend or family’s address, Amazon Lockers, Flex Delivery, checking with local shipping companies, planning ahead, and considering digital alternatives are some strategies that can help you receive packages while on the move. Remember to always communicate with senders and be respectful of the efforts of others who help you receive packages.

Happy nomadic living!
